You’ve got a website, but when you search for your business or your services, it’s nowhere to be found. It’s one of the most common and frustrating problems small businesses run into. Here are the usual causes, roughly in the order we check them.

1. Google hasn’t indexed it yet

New sites and new pages take time to be discovered. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google. If nothing comes up, Google hasn’t indexed your site. Setting up Google Search Console and submitting a sitemap is the first step.

2. Your site is telling Google to stay away

It happens more than you’d think: a “discourage search engines” setting left on after launch, a noindex tag on important pages, or a robots.txt file blocking the whole site. One setting can make a site invisible.

3. Technical errors

Broken pages, redirect loops, server errors or pages Google can’t render properly all stop pages from ranking. Google Search Console shows many of these in its indexing reports.

4. It’s slow or broken on mobile

Google looks at the mobile version of your site first. If it’s slow, cluttered or missing content on phones, that holds you back.

5. The content doesn’t match what people search

If your homepage says “solutions for your needs” but people search “emergency plumber Scarborough”, Google has no reason to connect the two. Clear pages for each service and area, written the way customers search, make a big difference.

6. You’re up against stronger competitors

Showing up for your business name is one thing; ranking for competitive services is another. Competitors with more reviews, better content and more quality links will usually rank ahead until you close the gap.

7. No local presence

For local searches, your Google Business Profile often matters as much as your website. A missing or incomplete profile means you’re missing the map results entirely.

8. A penalty or a hacked site

Less common, but serious: spammy links, copied content or a security breach can push a site down or out of results. Search Console will usually flag manual actions and security issues.

What to do next

  1. Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
  2. Check your site’s search visibility settings and robots.txt.
  3. Test your site on your own phone and on a slow connection.
  4. Make sure every main service has its own clear page.
  5. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile.
